□ On Thursday, February 19, the Korea Legislation Research Institute (President Yeong-soo Han) hosted the "2nd 2026 Meet International Legal Experts (MILE)" lecture and the “3rd Sustainability and Climate Change Research Hub Seminar”, inviting Dean Somdeth Keovongsack and Vice Dean Sypha Chanthavong from the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the National University of Laos, a member institution of the Asia Legal Information Network (ALIN).
ㅇ ALIN is a regional network for the exchange of legal information in Asia, launched in 2005 under the initiative of KLRI. It currently comprises 43 institutions from 23 Asian countries and continues to promote cooperation through international academic conferences and joint research projects.
□ During the MILE lecture held in the main conference room, Dean Keovongsack delivered a presentation titled “Challenges in Legal Education and Law School Management in Laos.”
ㅇ He reviewed the development of legal education in Laos and pointed out structural limitations, including budget constraints and difficulties in introducing performance-based education, emphasizing the importance of international cooperative networks.
□ The seminar, moderated by Dr. Eun-hye Jang, Head of the Sustainability and Climate Change Legislation Team, featured a presentation by Vice Dean Chanthavong titled “A Review of Laws and Policies Related to Wildlife Facilities in Laos.”
ㅇ Vice Dean Chanthavong highlighted the complexity of the legal and policy framework concerning wildlife and the insufficiency of biosafety standards, proposing the establishment of a comprehensive national policy based on the “One Health” approach.
ㅇ Following the presentations, researchers from KLRI’s Legislation Exchange and Cooperation Team and the Sustainability and Climate Change Legislation Team engaged in a discussion, sharing recent legislative trends in both countries and exploring practical measures for improvement.
□ KLRI President Yeong-soo Han stated, “The legislative issues and research needs in Laos identified through this event will serve as important foundational materials for future joint research, policy support, and the planning of academic events. We will continue to strengthen sustained and substantive cooperation with ALIN member institutions.”
ㅇ The KLRI plans to further enhance understanding of legislative issues in the Asian region and to reinforce interregional legal exchange and cooperation frameworks based on its close network with ALIN member institutions.
