The University of the Philippines has built a reputation as the national university that produces scientific and artistic output which have received national and international recognition. Surviving global wars, colonial occupations, civil rights struggles and cultural upheavals, economic downturns and upsurges, UP has played a role in shaping the Philippines’s political and social consciousness. Ultimately, it has helped shape and define the Filipino identity.

Established in 1908 as a small campus in Manila with only seven colleges, it has grown into eight constituent universities located in 21 campuses throughout the Philippine archipelago. UP prides itself in its academic excellence, outstanding research and public service. The guiding principle of “UP: Shaping minds that shape the nation” has been proven true time and again. UP graduates have become leaders in education, politics and governance, business, law, sciences, the arts and several other disciplines.
